What Is AI Visibility (AEO)? The 2026 Surface That Every Brand's Missing
Your brand shows up on Google's page 1. But does ChatGPT mention it? AI visibility is the surface most measurement tools haven't started tracking yet — here's what it is and how to check yours.
Start with one question
You Google your brand and you know what shows up: your homepage, your Instagram, your Google Business, maybe a press hit or two. You watch that page.
Now — do you check your brand on ChatGPT? On Perplexity? If someone asks "which brunch spot in Taipei is worth it?" does AI mention you? If not, you're missing a funnel entry that's growing faster than any other in 2026.
This piece is about that: AI visibility (in marketing circles: AEO — Answer Engine Optimization).
What AI visibility actually means
Simple version: when consumers stop typing into Google and instead ask ChatGPT / Perplexity / Google AI Overviews, does AI treat your brand as part of the answer?
It's different from SEO. SEO is about ranking — you want to be on page 1 for a keyword. AEO is about being cited — you want AI to reference you as a source when it answers a question.
The math changes. Page 1 has 10 slots. AI answers typically name 1–3 brands. Competition is more concentrated.
How AI engines decide who to cite
The exact ranking is a black box, but at least 3 signals appear to matter:
- Where you're written about — AI training data comes mostly from public web pages. Wikipedia, Reddit, Hacker News, industry media, blogs. The more times and contexts your brand appears in these sources, the more likely it lands in an answer.
- Whether your content is structured — JSON-LD, FAQ schema, Article schema. These help AI extract Q&A pairs from your page and drop them straight into answers. This is why FAQ pages became crucial in 2026 — they're the native format of AEO.
- Whether your language is unique — "Asia's largest creator marketing platform" vs. "Tell It Now's 5-surface health check" — the second is easier to cite because it's uniquely yours. Coined terms = owned citation slots.
How to check your current AI visibility
Cheapest check: write a list of questions your target customer might ask AI ("which brunch spots in Taipei are worth it," "coffee shops in Xinyi Taichung," "a creator I can hire to shoot a Reels for me"). Ask each one to ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google Gemini. Count how many answers mention your brand.
Zero? You need to start on AEO. 1–2? You're not invisible. 3+ across engines? You're already a regular.
Tell It Now's 5-surface health check treats AI visibility as its own score. We run a prompt list against major AI engines daily and track your mention rate. Most other tools haven't started tracking this surface yet.
How AEO relates to SEO
Not replacement — addition. SEO fundamentals (good meta, clean H1, internal linking) still matter because SEO-clean pages are what AI trains on. But if you only do SEO and not AEO — page 1 on Google, missing from every AI answer — you're losing a growing share of the funnel.
Reverse also doesn't work. AEO relies on crawlable content. You still need pages worth reading.
